| Thanks to Shar-pei Rescue of VA, Inc., who is taking this little girl and getting her the surgery she needs. This is the story of Little Angel. One day, weeks before the pictures here were taken, Little Angel got attacked by another dog. You can see some of the bite wounds on her tummy that are now scars. Other bite wounds were on her back left leg. Now, her owner, for reasons only she knows, did not take Little Angel to the vet to treat her bite wounds. Instead, she wrapped Little Angel's little leg in duct tape. Little Angel's leg must have hurt a lot. Anyone that has been bitten can tell you that not only are there scratches and punctures from the teeth, but there are also bruises. Often times the skin is yanked and pulled away from the underlying tissue when a dog bites and pulls away, leaving pockets full of bacteria. So our Little Angel MUST have been in pain those first few days after she was bitten. As the days went on, under the duct tape was a perfect place for bacteria to grow. It was dark and warm and moist...just what bacteria loves. Little Angel's little leg began to swell. As it did, the duct tape on her little leg became tighter and tighter. By now the pain must have been terrible. More days passed. Bacteria grew and grew and became hungrier and hungrier. Little Angel's little leg became more and more swollen, and the duct tape became tighter and tighter. Soon the blood supply to her leg began to slow as the duct tape and swelling compressed her blood vessels. The hungry bacteria began to dissolve and eat away the tissue of her leg. Soon her toes were no more. Eaten away by the bacteria. Slowly even the bones of her toes melted away. Before long the bacteria began to eat away at her feet. By now the pain must have been unbearable and torturous. The smell of the bacteria rotting away her flesh would have been horrid. More days went by, more flesh was eaten away. Under the duct tape even the bones of her feet began to erode. Then Little Angel's owner left town on a trip. She left Little Angel and her rotting leg in the care of a relative. Little Angel lived in an apartment complex. One day, the manager of the complex spotted Little Angel. She told the relative of the owner, that dogs were not allowed in the apartment complex. The manager also noticed Little Angel's not-so-little leg. The manager of the apartment complex called the police. The police contacted the local shelter and an Animal Control Officer went to see Little Angel. Little Angel was then brought to a local emergency hospital. What they saw caused quite a stir in the hospital. What they saw is what you can see in the pictures to the left. The things poking out of the bottom of her leg are the bones of Little Angel's feet. You can see the damage goes well up into her thigh. You can see that the tissue is gone, her skin is gone, her toes and part of her foot is gone. You are lucky, you can not smell the smell or hear her cries. Here is a synopsis of what her doctors wrote over the last day and a half: "...taken by the ACO from the owners for neglect...a wound that was reported to be an old bite wound that was covered with duct tape...the left hind leg has a 360 degree strangulation wound...degloving injury 360 degrees around the hock...the metatarsal bones (foot bones) are exposed all phalanges (toe bones) are gone...severe necrotic infected wound...significant infection, swelling and pain associated with this injury...due to the pain associated with this injury no bandage could be applied to cover the wound...Shar Pei rescue was contacted...will determine the course of treatment and future of this pup tomorrow...estimated cost of surgery (amputation) $1500-1800...pet released by owners to ACO and to Shar Pei rescue...polaroid pictures have been taken...digital pictures are not always acceptable in court...at this time it does not appear that charges will be laid against the owners..."
